Succulents as houseplants
Succulents are very popular as houseplants, and for good reason. There are many different species and varieties to choose from, so there is something for every taste and almost every windowsill. They are also easy to look after – at least if you bear a few things in mind. Here are some tips on how to look after your succulents to keep them thriving in your home.
Choosing the right pot
To help your succulents thrive, it’s important to choose the right planter. It should have a drainage hole to prevent waterlogging. Clay pots are ideal because the pores in the clay allow excess water to evaporate.
The right substrate
Succulents need well-drained soil. Special succulent soil or a mixture of cactus soil and mineral components such as sand, perlite or expanded clay will ensure that water drains well and does not pool.
The right location
Succulents love light! It’s best to place them near a bright window. Unlike many other houseplants, succulents will grow on a south-facing window. However, a west-facing window is also very suitable. If you don’t have a south- or west-facing window in your home, you can choose succulents that don’t need as much light.
You can also put succulents outside in the summer. However, it is important to slowly acclimate them to the sun to avoid sunburn. Then choose a bright to sunny spot.
Watering succulents properly
As indoor plants, succulents need very little water. Always wait until the soil is dry before watering again. Avoid stagnant water, as this can quickly lead to root rot. Your plants will need even less water in winter because they are dormant.
Fertilize correctly
During the growing season (spring to summer), succulents are happy with a little boost of nutrients. Feed them about once a month with a special cactus food or a highly diluted liquid fertiliser. In winter you can stop fertilising altogether.
When to repot?
You should repot your succulents at least every two to three years – either because the substrate is exhausted or because the roots have run out of room. The best time to do this is in spring. This gives the plants time to get used to their new home.
Do I need to turn the pot regularly?
Yes, it’s a good idea! Succulents always grow towards the light. Turning the pot from time to time will help them grow more evenly and prevent them from tilting to one side.
Propagating succulents
Propagating succulents is a breeze! You can propagate them by taking leaf cuttings, head cuttings or suckers. Allow the cuttings to dry for a few days before placing them in slightly damp soil. After a few weeks, roots will form and you will have a new little succulent plant.
Do succulents need to be dusted or cleaned?
Yes, dust can affect your plants’ ability to absorb light. You should dust them occasionally with a soft brush or dry cloth. Water is not a good choice, as standing moisture on the leaves can cause them to rot.
These simple tips will keep your succulents healthy and growing beautifully – with very little maintenance!
