Plants for the bathroom – these also grow in low light
Would you like to transform your bathroom into an oasis of well-being with plants, but you don’t have much light? No problem, we’ll tell you which house plants will also beautify a dark bathroom.
The warm, humid air in the bathroom is ideal for houseplants that originally come from tropical areas. However, many bathrooms only have a small window or face north. This can make the bathroom look quite gloomy, which isn’t a problem when showering or brushing your teeth. If you want to beautify your bathroom with houseplants, you have to consider the light requirements of your green roommates. Fortunately, there are some species that grow well even in low light.
Parlour Palm (Chamaedorea elegans)
The parlour palm is very uncomplicated and does well in semi-shaded to shaded locations. Their fronds are reminiscent of sandy beaches when you’re lounging in the bathtub – and the plant loves the warm water vapour. Mountain palms have the advantage of growing relatively narrow. However, your bathroom shouldn’t be too small, as the plants can grow to be one to two metres high. However, they only grow slowly in dark locations.
Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum wallisii)
The peace lily grows in its native habitat under the leafy canopies of tall trees and therefore thrives in semi-shaded and dark locations. Its substrate should never be allowed to dry out completely, although the plant usually recovers well after a period of dryness. Since the peace lily is very easy to care for and grows particularly well in high humidity, it is the ideal plant for the bathroom.
Snake PlantAfrican Lily (Sansiveria)
The snake plant, also known also as mother-in-law’s tongue or devil’s tongue, is an extremely robust and easy-care plant that grows in almost every place in the home, including the bathroom. The plants feel most comfortable in a bright to semi-shaded location. However, it also thrives in dark bathrooms, although it will then grow more slowly and develop darker leaves.
Golden Pothos (Epipremnum)
The golden pothos thrives in the warm, humid climate of the bathroom and will even put up with a shady spot. However, the leaves are not as variegated and tend to be darker in a dark location. It also forms longer shoots because the plant stretches towards the light.
Pothos forms long tendrils and can be cultivated either as a climbing plant with a climbing aid or as a hanging plant. It is therefore well suited for small bathrooms because it does not require space on the floor in a hanging basket.
They grow well in normal potting soil and can withstand short periods of dryness rather than too much water.
ZZ plant or aroid palm (Zamioculcas zamiifolia)
The ZZ plant grows in light and dark locations, even if it grows more slowly in low light and has darker leaves. The succulent plant is very easy to care for and robust and needs little watering. The lucky feather grows to between 40 and 60 centimeters in height.

Bird’s Nest Fern (Asplenium nidus)
The bird’s nest fern tolerates a shady location, but also feels comfortable in a bright place. In addition to an even temperature, which should not fall below 18 degrees, high humidity is important to it. Therefore, it is well suited to the bathroom. The bird’s nest fern needs plenty of water. Nevertheless, you should always check whether the soil is dry before watering to avoid waterlogging. Don’t water the ‘nest’ itself, but the soil around it, otherwise it can lead to blight.
