Make your own seed tape: a simple guide
Seed tapes are extremely useful for sowing seeds. They make gardening a lot easier, as the planting distance is precisely maintained and fallen seeds do not disturb the rows. This method also saves a lot of time: simply place the seed tapes on the ground at the correct distance and cover with soil for dark-germinating seeds… – done! The paper also protects the seeds of light-germinating plants from drying out.
Make your own seed tape – easy and cheap
You don’t have to buy seed tape – you can make your own. It’s particularly practical: making your own seed tape is a great activity for children and increases the excitement of gardening.
Newspaper is a good material because it is stronger than toilet paper or kitchen roll. The fold of a newspaper is ideal as this area is usually free of ink. If there are printed areas, they can be cut off after drying. If you don’t have a newspaper to hand, you can use kitchen roll.
This is what you need to make a homemade seed tape:
- Old newspaper
- Scissors
- Flour, water, pastry brush, small bowl
- Folding rule
- Seeds of your choice
Instructions: Make your own seed tape
- Mix the flour and water in a small bowl until you have a thick paste. Small lumps are fine.
- Cut the fold in the newspaper to make strips about 3-4 cm wide.
- Open the fold and brush the inside with the flour and water mixture.
- Place the ruler next to the strip of paper and place the seeds at the correct distance.
- Close the fold and leave to dry.
Making your own seed tape is really easy and will not only save you money, but also ensure perfectly sown rows in your bed. Now you can start gardening!
