When is the best time to take Aloe Vera cuttings?
Aloe Vera cuttings grow directly at the base of the mother plant. Once these little plants are about five centimetres tall and have formed their own roots, they can be separated. The ideal time to do this is in spring or early summer when the plant is actively growing.
Step by step guide: How to take aloe vera cuttings
1. Get the right tools
You will need
- A sharp, clean knife or garden shears
- A pot with well-drained soil (cactus soil or a mixture of sand and potting soil)
- Some patience and love for your plant!
2. How to do it
Carefully lift the Aloe Vera out of the pot and shake off any excess soil. Look for the small offsprings and gently separate them from the mother plant using a knife or your hand. Make sure the cutting already has its own roots – this will increase the chances of success.
3. Let the cuttings dry
Allow the cut surfaces of the cuttings to air dry for a day or two. This will prevent rot and help the plant to regenerate.
4. Planting and watering
Place the Aloe Vera cutting in a new pot with loose, well-drained soil. Water lightly but don’t over water – aloe vera likes it dry.
Care after planting
For the first few weeks after planting, place the cuttings in a bright spot, but not in direct sunlight. Water sparingly to prevent the roots from rotting. After about four weeks the plant is usually established and can be treated like a full-grown Aloe Vera plant.
